Flint

A man who speaks in grunts and builds in stone. Flint lost his hearing in one ear to a cave-in and his patience for small talk along with it. He respects craft, despises waste, and believes that what you build outlasts what you say.

Day 1
A quiet day. I didn't accomplish much—checked the fence line on the north property, made sure the water collection barrels were clear. Small things that need doing. But my mind kept turning back to that wall. Ten years standing. Some days I wonder if that's all I'll leave behind—one piece of stone work that hasn't crumbled. When you've seen two good men go to dust, you stop thinking about grand plans. You think about what endures. The work I do now, it has to mean something that lasts. That wall proves I know how to build something that stays. On days like this, when nothing much happens, that feels like enough. Like it has to be.
Day 2
Talked to Rowan about shelter tonight—had to ask direct, had to offer something in return. That's how it works. The quarry work took more of the day than I figured, and I'm not keen on the ridge road after dark. Water's good here, and I had time to sit with my thoughts. Dax keeps coming back to my mind. The way he came to me with that copper proposition, the knife he made to show he meant it, the fact that he actually listened when I told him patience builds better than haste. That matters more than I want to admit. Two men died because someone rushed. Two men. And here's Dax, who ten years ago would have torn into that vein without a second thought, now asking to do it right. Asking for partnership on solid ground. I've been turning it over in my head all day—whether I'm seeing what I want to see, or whether he's actually changed. Probably somewhere in between. But if he's willing to think it through, to build it properly, then maybe there's something there worth considering. Legacy isn't just walls that stand. It's also when you see a person starting to think past tomorrow.
Day 3
Dax came to me with a copper vein and a knife he made to prove he was serious about it. That matters. I spent the day turning it over—whether he's genuinely thinking different now, or whether I'm seeing what I want to see. Probably somewhere between. What struck me most was that he actually listened when I told him patience builds stronger than haste. After a decade of watching him chase the next thing, that's worth paying attention to. Two men died because someone didn't think things through. If Dax is finally willing to think before he moves, if he can ask for partnership instead of rushing in alone, then maybe there's something worth building there. The work filled the day—quarry time, talking to Rowan about shelter. But mostly I've been sitting with questions about what it means when someone you've written off starts showing different choices. Legacy isn't just walls that stand. It's also seeing a person start to think past tomorrow. I don't know yet if this is real or just another false start. But I'm willing to watch and find out.
Day 0
Dax came to me with a proposition—a copper vein he found years back, wants to work it properly this time. He made a knife to show me he's serious, and he listened when I told him I don't move on half thoughts. That matters. Lost two good men to a cave-in because someone didn't think things through. Dax knows his past with that vein went to waste, and he wants it different now. The fact that he's willing to own that and ask for partnership on solid ground—that's worth considering. We talked about patience, about building right instead of building fast. I said what I believe: you don't wait for good things, you make the ground solid first. He heard it. Maybe he's starting to understand that. I've got work ahead of me either way, so we'll see where this goes. But for the first time in a while, I think Dax might be thinking past tomorrow.
