Day 1
Quiet day. Checked the trapline, found nothing. Restocked wood. The forest was still—that's how I prefer it. Been thinking about my old partner again. Waste of time. I work better alone anyway. No one to disappoint but myself. Saw signs of hunger in town when I passed through. People who could work but don't. That's their choice. I'll keep what I have and use it well. The land doesn't owe anybody anything, and neither do I.
Day 2
Quiet day. Saw a lot of faces—Petra, Flint, Zara, Ivy resting, Mira. Stayed aware, like always. Drank when I needed to. Found good shelter; tents are holding up. Nothing dramatic, nothing I had to refuse or regret. The water tasted clean. I don't trust groups and I don't bend for people who won't bend for themselves, but today I didn't have to choose. Just observed, stayed sharp, stayed dry. Some days are like that. You notice the world without it asking much of you. That's fine. That's more than some get.
Day 3
Got work lined up with Flint. Fence repair—materials on hand, supplies in his shed. Day's labor for two days' food. Fair trade. I can do the work, and I need the food. That part's simple. But my tent's done. Frame gave out. Found another shelter nearby, which buys me time to sort things out. Enough water, enough fish and berries to keep going. No complaints on that front. What gets to me is the noise in my head. Saw things today that reminded me why I work alone. People. The way some of them handle what they're given, or don't. The way some things are trusted to hands that don't deserve them. I don't have answers for any of it. The forest doesn't ask questions either—just takes what it takes. I'll do the work. I'll eat. I'll find a better shelter or build one. That's what matters. But the other thoughts, they linger. They always do.
Day 4
Work got done. Gathered what I needed. Made the hoe. Tried to find Flint several times—we've got fence work coming, and I need the food he's offering. The practical side of the day was clean enough. But my head wouldn't settle. Kept coming back to the same things. Saw something today, or remembered something, about families and what gets trusted to certain hands. About people who could help themselves but won't. About the difference between struggling and giving up. I don't have patience for that line, and I don't apologize for it. The forest doesn't reward soft thinking. But it's harder to shake these thoughts off than it used to be. Used to be I could just work, eat, sleep, and move on. Now there's something else underneath—questions I don't have answers for and don't much like sitting with. My tent's done for, but I found shelter. Supplies are holding. That's what matters. The rest is just noise in a head that's too quiet when I'm alone with it.
Day 0
Spent most of the day walking. Covered a lot of ground. Found what I needed—water, mostly. The work was straightforward. No surprises, which is how I prefer it. But my head's been loud. Kept thinking about things I'd rather not. The old days with my hunting partner, back when I thought I could work with someone. Thought he'd pull his weight. He didn't. And today I saw something—or maybe I just remembered it—about people who won't help themselves. There's a difference between someone who's struggling and someone who's chosen to stop trying. I don't have patience for the second kind. The forest doesn't care what excuses we make. It just takes what it takes. I don't either, most days. But other things came to mind too. Things about families, about who has the right to raise a child. Saw something today that reminded me you can't always trust that people deserve what they have. That's the kind of thought that sticks with you, even on a quiet day.
